The Starlink Mini has become a favourite for merchant vessels and small craft: light, low-power, and easy to mount. Here is what six real installations taught us.

Where to mount it

• Mast or railing brackets are the most common — the Mini's small footprint fits where a full-size dish won't.
• Keep a clear view of the sky: funnels, cranes and superstructure cause obstruction dropouts.
• On merchant vessels we often use the monkey island or a bridge-wing rail.

Power and cabling

• The Mini runs on 12–48 V DC — it can feed straight from the vessel's DC bus, no inverter needed.
• Use marine-grade cable glands where the run enters the accommodation.
• Typical draw is 25–40 W — a fraction of a full VSAT terminal.

Network on board

Pair the Mini with MikroTik or TP-Link Omada gear to split crew and business traffic, set fair-use limits per cabin, and keep bridge systems isolated. We pre-configure this for every installation.
